“Jeeves and the Delayed Exit of Claude and Eustace”

(original transmission date: 4/1/1966)

“Jeeves and the Delayed Exit of Claude and Eustace” is the opening episode of the second series of The World of Wooster and was adapted by Richard Waring.

It is one of the only two complete episodes of the series confirmed to exist, the other being “Jeeves, the Aunt, and the Sluggard”. It was selected in 1982 to rerun as part of the BBC's 60th anniversary celebration programming, and seems to have been by then the sole remaining episode held in the BBC archives, possibly due to its having been entered in the 1966 Rose d'Or Awards. It was repeated on BBC Four in 2002. The BFI holds the original master, as well as viewing tapes, and the Kaleidoscope Archive holds a 16mm telerecording. A recording of the 1982 repeat has been uploaded on Youtube.

Synopsis

“Someone, somehow, must dig from the old brain-box a wheeze to rid the Wooster household of the two young drips and iron out Bertie's wrinkled love-life. Who else but that consummate rescuer of young masters from old soups: Jeeves?”
Radio Times, December 30th, 1965

An adaptation of “Sir Roderick Comes to Lunch” and “The Delayed Exit of Claude and Eustace”. Bertie's appointment with his prospective father-in-law turns to disaster when his cousins, Claude and Eustace, fill his flats with “cats, hats, and handles”. Their behaviour deeply concerns Aunt Agatha, and it is decided they should be sent to South Africa. Acting as chaperon for their last night of revelry, Bertie inadvertently introduces them to the woman he has been courting and they both miss the boat in order to fight for her attention.

Although Sir Roderick Glossop had been introduced in the first series in “Jeeves and The Hero's Reward”, he does not appear here and is substituted for a new character, Sir Humphrey Wardour. Similarly, Uncle George, who will later feature in “Jeeves and the Indian Summer of an Uncle”, is also absent from the programme and his character is replaced by Uncle Oliver, who appears again in “Jeeves and the Clustering Round Young Bingo”.
